How to Research and Compare Facilities

A facility tour is important, but families should also review licensing, inspections, staffing, services, costs, and resident rights before making a decision.

Affordable and Independent Senior Housing Resources

Adult care and skilled nursing facilities are not the only options. Older adults who can live independently may qualify for senior apartments, public housing, rental assistance, or supportive housing.

Regional Aging Resources

Area Agencies on Aging can help older adults and families understand available services, explore care options, connect with local programs, and contact a long-term care ombudsman.

Contact a Long-Term Care Ombudsman

North Carolina’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program provides information and advocacy for residents of nursing homes, adult care homes, family care homes, and assisted living facilities. An ombudsman can:

  • Explain long-term care options and residents’ rights
  • Help families evaluate and select a facility
  • Answer questions about facility care and policies
  • Help residents and families communicate concerns
  • Work to resolve complaints involving a long-term care facility

Visit the North Carolina Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to learn more or locate a regional ombudsman.

Questions to Ask During a Facility Tour

  • What level of care does the facility provide?
  • Can the facility continue meeting the person’s needs if their condition changes?
  • Is specialized dementia or memory care available?
  • What is included in the monthly fee, and which services cost extra?
  • How are medications managed?
  • How many staff members are available during the day, evening, and overnight?
  • How does the facility handle falls, medical emergencies, and hospital transfers?
  • How often are residents assessed for changes in care needs?
  • What activities, meals, transportation, and social opportunities are available?
  • How are families informed about changes in health or behavior?
  • Can residents continue receiving hospice care in the facility?
  • What are the admission, discharge, and refund policies?

Whenever possible, visit more than once and at different times of day. Speak with residents and families, observe how staff members interact with residents, review inspection information, and carefully read all contracts before making a final decision.
