What Is a Family Care Home?
Family care homes are licensed residential settings for two to six unrelated adults. They may provide room and board, meals, supervision, medication assistance, and help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, mobility, and personal care.
Before choosing a home, families may want to ask about:
- Current availability and waiting lists
- Monthly rates and additional fees
- Staffing during the day and overnight
- Medication management
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Experience with dementia or other specialized care needs

In addition to contacting a facility directly, families can review licensing and inspection information through the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. Available information may include inspection reports, star ratings, corrective actions, and certain penalties.
When possible, visit a prospective home in person. Pay attention to the condition of the home, how staff interact with residents, accessibility, cleanliness, meals, activities, and the overall atmosphere.
Can Residents Receive Hospice or Palliative Care in a Family Care Home?
In many cases, residents of family care homes may continue receiving outside healthcare services, including hospice or palliative care, when those services are appropriate and the home can safely support the resident’s needs.
